Hutto Takes 2nd in State at UIL Robotics Competition

Hutto ISD Robotics Team is the State UIL Runner-up after a great finish in last week's BEST Robotics competition in Frisco, TX.

Hutto High School joined forces with students from Hutto Middle School and Farley Middle School to form a massive team of nearly 70 students. The newly formed Hutto United Robotics Team consists of team members ranging from 6th Grade through 12th Grade.  Many of the Hutto High
School juniors and seniors on the team were a part of the original Hutto Middle School Robotics team that began competing with BEST Robotics five years ago.

BEST Robotics hosted the UIL State Robotics Championship & Texas BEST Regional Robotics Championship simultaneously in Frisco, December 8-10.  The UIL State Robotics Championship consisted of teams from all over the state of Texas and was separated in two categories: small
schools (1A-4A) and large schools (5A-6A).  Nearly 600 teams from Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma compete for an opportunity to participate in the Texas BEST Regional Robotics Championship.  The top 75 teams from both categories convened to participate in the momentous
event.

The Hutto Robotics team competed over three days in Marketing Presentations, Sales Exhibit & Interviews, Engineering Notebook, Spirit & Sportsmanship and the all-important Robot Head-To-Head competitions.  Hutto was crowned the UIL State Runner-Up in the 5A & 6A division and third place across all divisions in the Texas BEST Regional Championship.  Hutto Robotics also won first place in the Spirit & Sportsmanship Category.

The road to UIL State and Texas BEST Regionals went through the Heart of Texas BEST Robotics competition held in Waco on October 28th & 29th.  Hutto Robotics bested 24 teams to win 1st Place Exhibit & Interview, 1st Place Spirit & Sportsmanship, 1st Place Engineering
Notebook, 6th Place Robot Head-to-Head and 1st Place BEST Overall.

Carson Page, a member of the original HMS Robotics team and now a senior, commented on the fact that the STEM department of Hutto ISD has grown tremendously and stated, “It’s really nice to see so many new people getting involved in robotics and STEM due to all the new programs and classes being implemented at all the schools in our district.”
When asked about his experience working with middle schoolers, Page replied, “It’s a lot of fun and, though they aren’t as experienced, they still have a drive to succeed, which is what this
team needs in order to be successful.”

The Hutto United Robotics Team’s head coaches are Andrew Haub (Hutto High School) and Ryan Mann (Hutto Middle School), assisted by Mistie Young (Farley Middle School) and Luke Padgett (Hutto Middle School).
